Portland Marathon Runner-up Laurie Porter Part Of A Talented Family
Porter, a 45-year-old mother of four from the state of Washington, ran 2:58:18 in Portland on October 1 and harbors ambitions of qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials with a 2:47. “Although she’s 45, she’s got faster running in her,” believes her coach, Sean Coster. “It’s given me a lot of confidence,” Porter said of her Portland performance. “I’ve set some goals, and I absolutely believe I can reach them.” Porter’s mother began running marathons at age 51, two of her daughters finished first and second in Washington’s Class 2A state cross country championships last fall, and a son qualified for the state meet as a freshman.

Alyssa Tower 10,000m age group record -
It was, Alyssa Tower said, “kind of a weird glory moment.”
On a cool May 10 evening in Monmouth, Ore., with the remnants of a crowd and a few family members and supporters there to watch, the Vancouver woman finished sixth in a field of eight runners in a 10,000-meter race.
And ran into the record book.
By finishing the 10,000 meters at the John Knight Twilight meet in 37 minutes, 57.46 seconds, the 45-year-old broke the American record for women 45-49. Running the 6.2-mile race at a pace of just more than six minutes a mile, Tower bettered an American record for her age that stood since 1991 when Joan Coleman ran it in 38:10.89.
